Famed 'Screaming Eagles' Prepare for Afghanistan Deployment
FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. - Cold drizzle and hot metal rained upon the ground, Jan. 31, as a group of 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) soldiers honed their mortar - and howitzer-targeting skills in preparation for deployment to Afghanistan in April.

Forward observer Army Spc. Daniel L. Howes wiped raindrops from his eyes from the second-story window of a wooden training structure as he watched 81 mm and 120 mm mortar shells and 105 mm howitzer rounds explode hundreds of yards away. The St. Paul, Minn., native quickly radioed adjusting-fire instructions to colleagues manning the mortars.

Howes is among about 3,800 4th Brigade Combat Team soldiers from Fort Campbell that are preparing to deploy to eastern Afghanistan this spring. [...]
Troops Kill Four Suspected Terrorists, Capture 22, Destroy Weapons
WASHINGTON - Coalition and Iraqi forces killed four suspected terrorists and detained 22 others in Iraq over the past three days, military officials reported.

In operations today:

Coalition forces killed four armed terrorists and nabbed two suspects during an operation targeting individuals linked to an alleged terrorist training facility north of Baqubah. Troops also found and destroyed improvised explosive device materials, grenades, machine guns, military-style assault vests, and a vehicle containing IED materials and camouflage uniforms. [...]
Eagle 6, Eagle 7 Visit Bastogne Brigade in Iraq Combat Badges Awarded
TIKRIT, Iraq - The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) leadership, Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Schloesser and Command Sgt. Major Vincent Camacho, visited 1st Brigade Combat Team "Bastogne" in Salah ad Din province Jan. 28.

The Screaming Eagle leaders first visited Soldiers of 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment at Forward Operating Base Summerall, near Bayji.

Schloesser visited a Bulldog company aid station and motor pool, while Camacho attended a non-commissioned officer professional development meeting. Both leaders were able to get a first-hand look at the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle. [...]
Operation Iron Boston Targets Al-Qaida Hideout
PATROL BASE YUSIFIYAH, Iraq - Iraqi army and Soldiers from Companies C and D, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), air assaulted into the Sa'id Abdullah Corridor, Jan. 27.

CAMP STRIKER, Iraq - With almost 90 days on the ground, Rakkasan Soldiers are pleased at progress in their areas of responsibility.

"I think we are doing a very good job of addressing the requirement of realizing that there is no single decisive point in this effort," said Lt. Col. A Seamless Hand-off: 82nd Prepares Andar ANP As Leaders in Security
ANDAR DISTRICT, Afghanistan - Fighting with the bitter winter-cold in southeastern Afghanistan's Ghazni province, one remotely-located 82nd Airborne Division company could have decided to start taking things easy after an extremely busy 12 months, especially with only three more until their redeployment back to Fort Bragg, N.C.

Instead, paratroopers from Company A, 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team are choosing to make sure all that was accomplished during the past year in Ghazni province's Andar District won't go to waste. [...]
