He said that the last bastion controlled by the terrorists in Baghdad has fallen into the hands of the US and Iraqi forces. He described the situation in Iraq "as very dangerous and very difficult, weapons are few but men are even fewer." He wrote this in bold, large, red letters. [...]

Aw, GEE! Poor Jihads. I do recall predicting this very topic and this very outcome some months ago when the Troop Surge was building up. Chalk up another PLUS for A Newt One. It looks like out Troops have thinned out the Jihadi Scum gene pool to all time lows...this is a GREAT thing.

In an AP interview with General Lynch:

[...] "The surge gave us the combat power to take the fight to the enemy," Lynch said. He cited a Jan. 10 battle in Arab Jabour where U.S. bombers dropped 40,000 pounds of bombs in 10 minutes to clear an insurgent stronghold.

U.S. troops have built 50 new bases south of Baghdad where they live full time instead of commuting from massive bases in western Baghdad as they had in the past, Lynch said.

"Once you're there, the local citizens come forward and ask two questions: 'Are you gonna stay?' If the answer is yes, they say: 'How can we help'" [...]

There have been reports that there are only 200 "foreign" Al Qeada fighters remaining in Iraq but I will not swear to that...that report could be a ruse of sorts by AQI.

Operation Phantom Phoenix pretty much decimated the AQI stronghold and the remaining Jihadi Scum fled to the north in Mosul

Iraqi government spokesman Ali Al-Dabbagh has said that the next two days will see the beginning of the "deciding battle" against Al-Qaeda members in Mossul.

He denied news of a possible closure of the border with Syria during the expected activity, saying that there was security cooperation between the two countries.

He added that in order to expel Al-Qaeda members from Mossul, there was a need for cooperation of the tribes and city residents themselves, as happened in Baghdad and in other regions in Iraq.

He said that the government was determined "to destroy the terror groups in Mossul and to purge it of Al-Qaeda."

Massive New Offensive Planned Against Al Qaeda

With the announcements over the last few days in regards to Al-Qaeda being 75% depleted in Iraq and OBL issuing whining and offensive diatribes in the forms of fruitless warnings, Pat Dollard brings us this:

The Multi-National Force and the Iraqi army and police are preparing to launch a large-scale offensive to crack down on al-Qaeda Organization north of Baghdad in two weeks' time, a high-ranking U.S. army official said on Sunday.

"In 2008, joint U.S.-Iraqi forces would stage large-scale operation to crack down on al-Qaeda organization in Diala river basin, Mosul and along the area the network was operating," Admiral Gregory Smith, the U.S. army communications officer, said in a press conference held in Baghdad.

The official declined to give further information about the size of troops launching the offensive for secrecy reasons. [...]

DUBAI (Reuters) - An al Qaeda-linked group in Iraq has confirmed the death of Abu Maysara, a top operative who the U.S. military said was killed in a clash last month, according to a recording posted on the Web on Saturday.

Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, leader of the Islamic State in Iraq, hailed Maysara as "a martyr who was a scholar and a mujahid (holy war fighter)", on the audio tape posted on Islamist Web sites.

The U.S. military said earlier in December that Maysara, a Syrian, was among nine senior al Qaeda members killed in November. It described him as an adviser to Baghdadi, also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri, and his slain predecessor Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. [...]

KARACHI - The Pakistani establishment has made a deal with the Taliban through a leading Taliban commander that will extend Islamabad’s influence into southwestern Afghanistan and significantly strengthen the resistance in its push to capture Kabul.

One-legged Mullah Dadullah will be Pakistan’s strongman in a corridor running from the Afghan provinces of Zabul, Urzgan, Kandahar and Helmand across the border into Pakistan’s Balochistan province, according to both Taliban and al-Qaeda contacts Asia Times Online spoke to. Using Pakistani territory and with Islamabad’s support, the Taliban will be able safely to move men, weapons and supplies into southwestern Afghanistan.

The deal with Mullah Dadullah will serve Pakistan’s interests in reestablishing a strong foothold in Afghanistan (the government in Kabul leans much more toward India), and it has resulted in a cooling of the Taliban’s relations with al-Qaeda.

Despite their most successful spring offensive last year since being ousted in 2001, the Taliban realize they need the assistance of a state actor if they are to achieve “total victory”. Al-Qaeda will have nothing to do with the Islamabad government, though, so the Taliban had to go it alone.
