The 1st Special Troops Battalion "Spartans" of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, like the Greek warriors of antiquity, are making military history by being the first Special Troops Battalion to control a significant amount of battle space in the Iraq theatre of operations.

CAMP STRIKER, Iraq - The Multi-National forces - Iraq command sergeant major visited with units within the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Feb. 28-29.
"It's always a privilege and an honor to be able to come back and visit units who are a part of the 101st," said Command Sgt. Maj. Marvin Hill. "It's especially gratifying to be able to spend time with the prestigious Rakkasans."
The MNF-I command sergeant major spent four tours with the 101st throughout his career. His final tour was in 2004 as division command sergeant major, serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom 04-05. [...]

CAMP STRIKER, Iraq - The Multi-National forces - Iraq command sergeant major visited with units within the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Feb. 28-29.
"It's always a privilege and an honor to be able to come back and visit units who are a part of the 101st," said Command Sgt. Maj. Marvin Hill. "It's especially gratifying to be able to spend time with the prestigious Rakkasans."
The MNF-I command sergeant major spent four tours with the 101st throughout his career. His final tour was in 2004 as division command sergeant major, serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom 04-05. [...]

Famed 'Screaming Eagles' Prepare for Afghanistan Deployment
FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. - Cold drizzle and hot metal rained upon the ground, Jan. 31, as a group of 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) soldiers honed their mortar - and howitzer-targeting skills in preparation for deployment to Afghanistan in April.
Forward observer Army Spc. Daniel L. Howes wiped raindrops from his eyes from the second-story window of a wooden training structure as he watched 81 mm and 120 mm mortar shells and 105 mm howitzer rounds explode hundreds of yards away. The St. Paul, Minn., native quickly radioed adjusting-fire instructions to colleagues manning the mortars.
Howes is among about 3,800 4th Brigade Combat Team soldiers from Fort Campbell that are preparing to deploy to eastern Afghanistan this spring. [...]

Coalition Forces Continue to Hunt Down Terrorists in Iraq
WASHINGTON - Coalition forces killed seven terrorists and detained 27 suspects today during operations to disrupt al-Qaida networks operating in central and northern Iraq.
In today's operations:
Coalition forces targeted suspected associates of an al-Qaida suicide-bombing network during operations southwest of Kifri. The targeted individuals are believed to be associated with terrorists killed yesterday near Khalis. As the ground force arrived in the area, the soldiers saw four enemy personnel leave the target building. Supporting aircraft engaged their position, killing the four terrorists. When the individuals inside the building did not comply with the forces' instructions to exit the building, the ground force engaged, killing three more terrorists. Coalition forces also detained 11 suspected terrorists during the coordinated operations and destroyed a building in the target area due to its potential use for terrorist activity. [...]

Gates Listens to Fort Campbell Soldiers', Spouses' Concerns
FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. - Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates met with a number of soldiers who are getting ready to deploy to Afghanistan, and he visited with a group of Army spouses during his first official visit, Feb. 1.
The secretary held closed-door meetings with both groups, where he listened to concerns such as the current length of overseas deployments, medical and child day care, housing allowances and other issues.
Gates told reporters after the meetings that he was prepared to do some "bureaucracy busting" to resolve some of the issues raised by the soldiers and spouses.

Gates: Baghdad Bombings May Show Insurgents' Desperation
FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. - The double-suicide bombings in Baghdad on Feb. 1, carried out by two women, may indicate desperation on the part of a beleaguered insurgency, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates told reporters.
The insurgents' use of women to launch suicide attacks may be "a manifestation of the success of our military operations," Gates told reporters at Fort Campbell, Ky., Feb. 1, after meeting with 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) soldiers and military spouses.
More than 70 people died and dozens were injured as the result of two suicide bombings carried out by two women in separate areas of the Iraqi capital city, according to news reports.
The actions of terrorists in employing women to conduct such horrendous attacks "is totally against the culture of the Arab world (and) is totally against Islamic faith," Gates said. "We just have to make sure that the people of Iraq and others in the Middle East recognize how horrible these people are in terms of the culture they're trying to attack." [...]

CAMP STRIKER, Iraq - Raids in Shubayshen and Qarghuli led Rakkasan Soldiers to the discovery of massive caches Jan. 30.
Acting on a tip from a local Iraqi citizen, the Iraqi Army partnered with Soldiers from 3rd Platoon, Company D, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division and found caches including dozens of rockets and rocket-propelled grenade rounds.
After noticing strange behavior from a citizen deemed upstanding in the community, 1st Lt. Keenan Ellison, 3rd Platoon leader, Co. D, 3-187th Inf., approached the man to see what was wrong. Within hours, several individuals were detained and a stockpile of explosives and bomb-making materials were taken off the streets.
The most interesting aspect was the location of one of the caches - a chicken coop. "The ground in the chicken coup wasn't right; the soil was loose, almost like sawdust," Ellison said. "We gently and carefully dug through it with our hands until we hit the jackpot." [...]

"There's still bad guys out there doing bad things," said Cmdr. Glen Leverette, commanding officer of Riverine Squadron 2. "I'm calling the river a seam that the insurgents were exploiting."

Coalition Forces Continue to Hunt Down Terrorists in Iraq
WASHINGTON - Coalition forces killed seven terrorists and detained 27 suspects today during operations to disrupt al-Qaida networks operating in central and northern Iraq.
In today's operations:
Coalition forces targeted suspected associates of an al-Qaida suicide-bombing network during operations southwest of Kifri. The targeted individuals are believed to be associated with terrorists killed yesterday near Khalis. As the ground force arrived in the area, the soldiers saw four enemy personnel leave the target building. Supporting aircraft engaged their position, killing the four terrorists. When the individuals inside the building did not comply with the forces' instructions to exit the building, the ground force engaged, killing three more terrorists. Coalition forces also detained 11 suspected terrorists during the coordinated operations and destroyed a building in the target area due to its potential use for terrorist activity. [...]

Gates Listens to Fort Campbell Soldiers', Spouses' Concerns
FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. - Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates met with a number of soldiers who are getting ready to deploy to Afghanistan, and he visited with a group of Army spouses during his first official visit, Feb. 1.
The secretary held closed-door meetings with both groups, where he listened to concerns such as the current length of overseas deployments, medical and child day care, housing allowances and other issues.
Gates told reporters after the meetings that he was prepared to do some "bureaucracy busting" to resolve some of the issues raised by the soldiers and spouses.

Gates: Baghdad Bombings May Show Insurgents' Desperation
FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. - The double-suicide bombings in Baghdad on Feb. 1, carried out by two women, may indicate desperation on the part of a beleaguered insurgency, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates told reporters.
The insurgents' use of women to launch suicide attacks may be "a manifestation of the success of our military operations," Gates told reporters at Fort Campbell, Ky., Feb. 1, after meeting with 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) soldiers and military spouses.
More than 70 people died and dozens were injured as the result of two suicide bombings carried out by two women in separate areas of the Iraqi capital city, according to news reports.
The actions of terrorists in employing women to conduct such horrendous attacks "is totally against the culture of the Arab world (and) is totally against Islamic faith," Gates said. BAGHDAD - Multi-National Division - Baghdad Soldiers captured a suspected special group criminal cell leader in the western Baghdad neighborhood of Hurriya, Feb. 10.
Soldiers with Company A, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), MND-B, detained the alleged cell leader during a raid in Hurriya.

Whatever his personal feelings are regarding death are pushed aside in order to accomplish the mission set before him. Soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team captured a diary Nov. 3, 2007, belonging to Abu Tariq, an al Qaida emir in control of five battalions within two sectors, U.S. Air Force Col. The passage of the 2008 Budget provides a basis for distributing resources for the needs of all Iraq's people, and to promote sustainable economic progress. After many months of careful preparation, negotiation and debate, the Provincial Powers Law represents an important step toward framing the balance the Iraqi people seek between central government authority and the strengthening of local governments. In passing this landmark law, Iraqi legislators have reached an historic compromise. BAGHDAD - Multi-National Division - Baghdad Soldiers uncovered two large caches and detained a suspected terrorist in Ghazaliyah Feb. 6.
While patrolling the area, Soldiers with Company B, 1st Battalion, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, came upon the first cache which included 56 60mm mortar rounds, 43 82 mm mortar rounds and 19 120 mm mortar rounds. The Soldiers apprehended a suspected terrorist in connection with the cache find.
The Soldiers called Explosive Ordnance Detachment personnel to destroy the cache.
Additionally, the Soldiers discovered a second cache, consisting of two 105 mm artillery rounds, a 120 mm artillery round, eight 121 mm mortar rounds, four 81 mm mortar rounds, 71 60 mm mortar rounds and 66 rocket-propelled grenade propellants.
This action is part of Multi-National Division - Baghdad offensive operations in support of Operation Phantom Phoenix.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (Feb. 6, 2008) - Numerous media reports have mischaracterized events in Tuesday's operation in Ad Dawr.
While conducting an intelligence-driven operation in pursuit of an al-Qaeda terrorist, Coalition forces approached the target house and, upon attempting entry, were confronted by a man who fired at the soldiers. The ground force returned fire, and the individual continued to fire at Coalition forces through a window, slightly wounding one soldier. The ground force called for the occupants of the house to come out multiple times, but were ignored.
Ground forces then entered the house and cleared the first two rooms without encountering any enemy. As forces entered a third room, an armed man was holding a woman as a human shield and aiming his weapon at the soldiers. Disregarding his personal safety, a soldier was able to push the woman aside and engage and kill the terrorist. [...]

Citizens of historied Samarra, Iraq, share casual conversations just mere blocks from the al-Askari "Golden Dome" Mosque with Soldiers from C Company, 2-237 Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), along with the 2-327 Infantry Regiment and 1st Brigade Combat Team leadership. The Samarra mayor and Salahahdin governor in conjunction with Iraqi security forces, recently opened up the Samarra Dam Bridge, connecting nearby communities to the city.
