BAGHDAD, Iraq (Jan. 16, 2008) - Coalition forces killed two terrorists and detained 17 suspects today during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks in northern Iraq.
In Bi'aj, Coalition forces conducted an operation targeting an al-Qaeda in Iraq leader for the network in the western region of Mosul. Reports indicate the wanted individual is a direct associate of numerous terrorist leaders, to include the al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri. The suspect allegedly has a history of terrorist activity that originated in Baghdad, and is believed to have been recently appointed to a leadership position in the region after the previous terrorist leader was killed. Two female suicide bombers kill 27, wound 53 civilians in separate attacks
FORWARD OPERATING BASE LOYALTY, Iraq (Feb. 1, 2008) - In two separate attacks, female suicide bombers struck two Baghdad markets in the Rusafa district killing 27 civilians and wounding 53 on Feb. 1.
At approximately 10:40 a.m. a female wearing a suicide vest improvised explosive device detonated her device outside the Shourja Market killing seven and wounding 23 local nationals.
Ten minutes later, a second female bomber detonated her device in the al-Jadida market killing 20 and wounding 30. [...]
Feb. 1 statement from Multi-National Force - Iraq condemning the bombings in Baghdad
(BAGHDAD, Feb. 1, 2008) - The Multi-National Force - Iraq joins with the Iraqi people and their government to express condolences to the victims and families of those who were killed in the barbaric attacks in two Baghdad markets today.
We share the outrage of the Iraqi people, and we condemn the brutal enemy responsible for these attacks. This indiscriminate violence, targeting families enjoying themselves on the holy day, again shows the nature of this barbaric enemy.
Multi-National Division - Baghdad is working closely with authorities to ensure they have sufficient medical supplies and humanitarian assistance for the victims and their families. We stand ready to provide additional support and will work closely with Iraqi authorities to find the perpetrators of this attack and help bring them to justice. [...]
