Today, China has told Taiwan to prepare to pay a high price if Taiwan continues on the road for independence, as if Taiwan is still owned by China. It seems that the message of independence from Red China has not been accepted by the Chinese government.
The United States has been the security blanket for Taiwan for decades and has its own freely elected government and its own trade partners and independent associations in the free and not-so-free world.
Red China cannot truly assert itself over Taiwan with the protection bubble of the United States.
Taiwan has been considering entering the United Nations as its own representation and Red China sees this as a threat.

Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949. Beijing considers the self-governing island Chinese territory and has threatened military attack if Taiwan tries to formalize its de facto independence. In Taiwan's' quest for definitive independence, Red China has continued the military build up with over 1,000 missiles aimed at Taiwan.
[...] Although the Taiwan Strait remains stable, China is adding more than 100 missiles a year to the estimated 1,000 it has targeting Taiwan. Hundreds of thousands of troops are based opposite the island, and hundreds of planes are ready to make good on China's threat to attack should Taiwan formalize its de-facto independence, the report said. [...]It is unclear what the "dear price" would be but as the sounds and rumors of war crop up around the world and 1,000 missiles aimed at Taiwan, without an exact statement from Red China as to their intent, it would be prudent to bolster the security bubble for Taiwan before their inclusion into the United nations assembly under the name of Taiwan.
