To some, the title of this post is a silly question. It is a silly question to a greater or lesser degree to various people for various reasons. I will even venture a guess that the vast majority of Americans think the question to be silly and, I imagine that the rest of the world thinks the same thing but I don't give a damn what the rest of the world thinks...I live in the United States and not someplace else.
So, why is the question silly?
Some would say that it is silly because the United States has brought this threat of terrorist attacks upon itself because of our Foreign Policies. To that I ask, which ones and why those? I never have gotten a straight and intelligently informed answer from any of the what I have termed, the Anti-Americanists. The most "popular" rhetorical answer I get is the "American Military Industrial Complex" and the "American Imperialism" themes and memes but the substantiation of those has yet to be brought forth in a rational manner.
Some would say that it is silly because there are "radical Islamic extremists" that have declared open war with the United States and pretty much all of the Western Nations. Until the enemy is vanquished, the State of War will always remain ever present. An example of this would be the State of War which exists to this day between North and South Korea. The same can be said about the State of War that exists between Israel and pretty much everyone around Israel save, Jordon, Lebanon and Egypt.
I say the question is silly because the United States has been under "attack" by terrorists - the Islamo Fascist terrorists - since the early to mid 1970s. We aided Israel with her Independence in 1948. We aided Israel in the 6-Day War in 1967. We aided Israel in the on and off war with Egypt between 1968 and 1970 over the Sinai Peninsula stemming from the loss of the Sinai in the 6-Day War. We supported Israel in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. We supported Israel from 1948 until this present day. Is this the Foreign Policy the Anti-Americanists are referring to?
When one does some basic background into Islamic inspired terrorist attacks upon the United States, it is clear that the attacks are in relation to our alliance with Israel. And, it is also readily obvious that Iraq was a key financier in those attacks. The Terrorism Research Center is a great place to begin your research.
What it boils down to is this. We are friends with Israel. So, no, we are not immune to terrorist attacks nor are we safe from the home-grown elements.
The above simplified post was inspired by an Al-Reuters article where President Bush was addressing the Homeland Security people and there were some dumb reporters there asking stupid questions.

"At this moment, somewhere in the world, a terrorist is planning an attack on us. I know that's inconvenient thought for some, but it is the truth," Bush said. [...]In some strange manner, inconvenient truths are considered Fear Mongering. How pathetic is that?
[...] "To stop new attacks on America we need to know who the terrorists are talking to, what they're saying, and what they're planning," he said. "We cannot get this vital information without the cooperation of private companies." [...]
